You can download and scan your computer for free.
I would avoid Norton. It is the only thing I have ever paid for on my PC and the only thing that has ground it to a halt. If you are gaming or gambling on line, or you want your PC to take less than ten minutes to shut down, then Norton is not your friend..
In my experience as long as you aren’t downloading dodgy stuff from the likes of limewire or Kazaa and you don’t go opening spam attachments or looking at suspect websites you should be fine with the freebies already listed.
If you are into privacy, then consider something like hushmail, using Tor circuits for anonymous surfing and get something like CC Cleaner to erase deleted files (clicking delete doesn’t mean a file can’t be recovered!)
You could always beast Bit Torrent for cracked copies of anything, but that kind of goes against the flow of this question!
I recommend Norton Security it’s the best and affordable,it protects your computer from all source of viruses, I know because I have it, I recommend it to everyone!!

I would be wary with a lot of free blockers. First off, a lot of them are spyware/malware programs themselves that are disguised as removers. They might remove some spyware but they install others files on to your computer without your permission.
Secondly if you want the best spyware protection most of the free programs fall short in features than the paid for programs. Some companies are dedicated specifically to spyware, adware, and anti-virus removal and are constantly providing upgrades and updating their database to fight new threats. This is the important thing. You have to stay on top of all the new spyware threats and many of the free spyware/virus blockers are not consistently updating themselves.
Out of all the spyware/virus removers I have used I would say No Adware is the best.
no. They are posted on the internet as free so people who are good at hacking can download them and work out how to get through them. Some viruses have also been created that can also get through most free firewalls.
The free anti-virus programs are most definitely NOT better than any other. They are passable and decent, but some paid anti-virus programs are so much better. Kaspersky is great, as well as Nod32. Twice as good as the free anti-virus programs, but not without a nominal fee. Anti-Spyware programs are a different story. AdAware, AVG Anti-Spyware, Spyware Doctor, Spybot Search and Destroy, and SuperAntiSpyware are ALL great FREE anti-spyware programs.
If you are running Windows, check out Windows OneCare live, it has a free 90 day trial so you can try it out and see if you like it. I have been using it about 3 years now.
zone alarm and avast will work together in protecting your system from virus’, trojans etc. because they have live protection and zone alarm is also a handy firewall. i suggest that you only have one firewall running at a time, as two or more can conflict and can lead to a damaged registry. one thing though, if i might say, you should download an application that specifically targets spyware, just for that extra bit of protecion.
i recommend spybot: search and destroy or ad aware. both can eaily be found.
as far as hackers go, the firewall should block any externals from accessing your files.
happy surfing!
